Department of Soil Science and Engineering
The Soil Science laboratory, which was planned simultaneously with the establishment of the School of Agriculture, officially began its educational and research missions in 1988, when the Faculty of Agriculture was founded and the first faculty members came in. It was in 2006 when the Department of Soil Science was officially founded by receiving the permit to run bachelor's programs – a plan which was executed two years later in 2008 by admitting its first students. This department was renamed in 2012 to Soil Science and Engineering. In addition, Master's programs (of four branches of “Soil Genesis and Classification”, “Soil Physics and Conservation”, “Soil Chemistry and Fertility” and “Soil Biology”) were first offered in 2012. This department currently admits students for Master's programs of Soil Resources Management (Soil Physics and Conservation - Soil Resources and Land Evaluation) and Soil Fertility and Biotechnology Management (Soil Chemistry and Fertility - Soil Biology and Biotechnology).
The faculty members of the department are active in teaching and researching in all fields of Soil Science, and as a mid-term goal, the department is striving to launch Ph.D. programs as well. All thanks to its faculty members, coordinators, students, and graduates, the department of Soil Science and Engineering has the right potential for research on local, national, and international levels.
Department goals
Since soil is a non-renewable natural resource, its wrong exploitation may cause damage to and reduction of agricultural products. Therefore, the main goal of the establishment and development of this department is to train graduates of Soil Science who have a good knowledge of soil nature and evaluation as well as soil management. Soil protection from various damages (e.g., erosion, contamination, salinization and sodification, etc) is likely, this way, for posterity. All in all, Soil Science could be classified as one of the basic and essential sciences (in Agricultural Engineering and Environmental studies) which deals with the quality, physical, chemical, biological, and micromorphological features of the soil.
