Cultural pluralism is a situation or general attitude towards citizens within a society in which minority groups can maintain their distinct priorities in socio-cultural issues besides those of the dominant culture. Within such culture, all the ethnicities, gender types and religious groups have the liberty to live without pressure or abuse by other groups, especially the dominant group. In this light, issues such as social tolerance, cultural tolerance, as well as gender diversity and tolerance are respected and practiced by all groups. Paul Auster’s The Brooklyn Follies is a novel that presents Brooklyn as a society for people of different ethnicities and types of gender. In this society, so far as people from different ethnicities, religions and gender types live their life styles and are not bullied by others, cultural pluralism is at work at its best and introduces Brooklyn as a utopia of such plurality. In this regard, the present thesis investigate the features of a pluralist society and how Paul Auster has been apt for presenting Brooklyn, with all its real and fictional features, as a cultural pluralist and tolerant society.
